Abstract

Japanese gardens represent one of the most refined forms of visual and spatial communication in landscape design. Rooted in centuries of tradition, they embody a deep dialogue between nature, culture, and human emotion. This paper explores the symbolic language of Japanese gardens, examining how elements such as water, rocks, plants, and empty space communicate philosophical concepts like harmony, transience, and balance. Beyond their aesthetic value, these gardens function as semiotic systems, conveying cultural narratives and moral values through the organization of natural elements. By analyzing their composition, symbolism, and sensory impact, the study highlights how Japanese gardens transcend mere decoration to become a medium of nonverbal communication a silent art form that expresses spiritual and cultural identity. The research also discusses the relevance of this symbolic communication in contemporary landscape architecture and its potential to inspire sustainable and meaningful design practices.
