THE TRADITIONAL HERITAGE OF MARAMUREȘ AS A RESOURCE FOR CULTURAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Abstract


The region of Maramureș, located in northern Romania, is widely recognized for its strong cultural identity, well-preserved traditions, and unique rural lifestyle. Wooden architecture, traditional clothing, religious rituals, winter customs, and ancestral crafts contribute to a distinct ethnographic profile that attracts visitors in search of authenticity. As cultural tourism continues to grow globally, Maramureș holds significant potential to develop sustainable tourism based on heritage preservation, community engagement, and experiential travel. This paper explores the ways in which traditional heritage can be transformed into a valuable resource for cultural tourism, emphasizing both its economic opportunities and its role in safeguarding local identity for future generations.
